Title: The Giver                                                                     By:

Author: Lois Lowry                                                                    Lili Smith

Genres: Speculative Fiction

Jonas lives in a perfect community where every thing is planned out for the people.  Jonas is about to turn 12 during the December ceremony that’s coming up and he is very nervous.  He receives his assignment, which is the receiver of memory.  This job comes with memories of the past, and Jonas leans about feelings in many memories.  He discovers a secret and decides to make a change in the community.

The theme of The Giver is based on the question “What is human?”  The author suggests that humans have to have feelings and freedom of chooses.  I agree with the author because if you don’t have feelings or if you can’t make your own chooses in life, other wise you’re like a puppet on a piece of string.  In this book, Jonas feels the same way as the author and me.  When he discovers memories that contain strong feelings he felt that everyone should have choices in life and I feel the same way.  That is why I think person has to have feelings and choices to be human.

I thought this book was good. I liked some parts but I also disliked other parts of this book. I liked how they would tell more details on how people’s jobs worked.  I didn’t like how every day and night the family units shared everything and how they released.  I liked how the author showed how Jonas felt.  I also did not like how everyone had to take the pill.  I would recommend this to my friends and family.  Because the beginning is slow, I think they would like the middle more than the beginning.  I would give this four stars.
